Use of free capacity in the grid


Since the power grid is built for the few peak hours in the year, there is a lot of free capacity in the grid. The free grid capacity can be used to charge batteries, by power to heat (P2H) systems, electrolyse, etc. These kinds of systems are assets that can be used to utilize the grid in a better way because the power needed to operate the systems can be adjusted according to the free capacity. We can call them Grid Utilizing Flex Assets (GUFA) systems.
Many companies use propane to create steam used in industrial processes. 1 GWh propane has a CO2 emission of 217 tons. If this is replaced by a P2H system using renewables, the emission will be close to 0 tons. A great save for the environment and a help to receive the 2050 emission objectives.
Use of the free capacity in the grid will also improve the ROI from the grid investment. The grid company will get better paid, and the extra income will help to keep the costs for the customers of the grid as low as possible.
We are also working to get a better capacity tariff for GUFA systems since they only are using the spare part of the grid, and especially batteries that can help to balance the grid by feeding power into the grid. We are working towards a kind of Connection with Terms, but on a different level where the adjustment of the power the GUFA systems are using is managed by the free capacity in real time. A lower tariff for GUFA systems improves the business case for operating a GUFA system because the capacity part of the grid costs will be reduced.
GUFA systems can also be used as flex assets in the reserve markets, and increase the business case even more.
